Things to Do This Month:
- start some vegetable and flower seed indoors
- prune apple and pear trees
- scout for black knot, bag worms, tent caterpillar egg masses, and other winter-visible problems
- have soil tests run
- bring bulbs for forcing indoors to warm up
- frost-seed lawns
- get catalogs; order seeds and plants
Things to Watch for This Month:
- voles in ornamental beds
- wildlife damage
- ice and snow weight injury to ornamentals
- house plant problems
- blooming primroses (if protected)
- blooming winter aconite, snowdrop (late in month)
- Overwintering insects (brown marmorated stink bug, boxelder bug, Asian lady beetle, Western conifer seed bug) that emerge and crawl or fly around indoors.
