Mercer County Horticultural Activities and Expectations

Things to Do This Month:

  • start some vegetable and flower seed indoors
  • prune apple and pear trees
  • scout for black knot, bag worms, tent caterpillar egg masses, and other winter-visible problems
  • have soil tests run
  • bring bulbs for forcing indoors to warm up
  • frost-seed lawns
  • get catalogs; order seeds and plants

Things to Watch for This Month:

  • voles in ornamental beds
  • wildlife damage
  • ice and snow weight injury to ornamentals
  • house plant problems
  • blooming primroses (if protected)
  • blooming winter aconite, snowdrop (late in month)
  • Overwintering insects (brown marmorated stink bug, boxelder bug, Asian lady beetle, Western conifer seed bug) that emerge and crawl or fly around indoors.
